A book illustrator, Soosh, talks about her work in fairytales.

Aug 6, 2022

As I was researching Soosh to begin this article correctly, I discovered her video clips. If you've ever seen her work, then you'll realize it's as if a magical fairytale was reborn. In addition, she adds her voice into the shape of stories, she makes the whole experience a complete and enchanting one in which her fairytale characters come to life. Read on, but be sure that you visit her YouTube channel to sip some hot tea and prepare yourself to enjoy a fairytale-themed evening.

We asked Soosh about the key to capture the smallest moments of everyday life in her artwork

"Hello, I'm Soosh. I was born and raised in the company of people. I identify myself with no religious, ethnic, or national background, or anything else. I spend my time looking at people, myself and others as I delve into the particulars of each. It's a tricky path, I didn't choose it intentionally and yet I'm on the path. If it's conventional art education I don't have any.

Though I'm aware there are different ways of painting and drawing can be described as styles, I have never given much thought as to what type of style my drawings could qualify as. If I tried for the right words to describe it, it would be a "fairytale realist" kind of style. But speaking frankly, no style.

I think the key for me, as I see it, is to see using your heart as you do with your eyes. It may take some practice to be able to see the little things, like with every other skill. You need to become quiet for some time and very much present in the moment. Pay attention. Observe closely, without haste.

My main obsession has always been with people. The way they express themselves, their mimics of their actions, their gestures acts of kindness, and their weaknesses - all of it is so fascinating and interesting for me. Then it's only the matter of a couple of pencils as well as a watercolour pen to dig into and create these everyday pictures in a paper."
