HTML0Your pursuit of new challenges and changing directions for your career.
Prior to moving to London in 2017 I was in a tiny town in Germany and freelanced as an After Effects animator. While there weren't many challenges in my creative abilities, my abilities slowed down quickly, and I got really unsatisfied.
The move to London and getting to know all the wonderful animation folks there gave me a massive positive boost in my motivation. I thought "Damn it! I'm now one of the elite youngsters . I've better get my gear going."
In the wake of my experience at the 2019 Pictoplasma exhibition, I took the decision to enter the community of innovative character designers. It was clear quick that my characters are best in 3D but I'm learning, and it's difficult, yet also extremely fulfilling!
My work was noticed by Greenhouse Animation, which is now my director for them.
The X-Files project as well as the mysteries of socks disappearing
One of the first client projects I created using my brand new-found style is the Covered by Lemonade clip.

Lemonade Insurance approached me to create a work to go with the current Instagram collaboration between artists. The company's role is as an insurance provider for content and the idea of cute household objects at risk immediately thought of. This is how the X-Files idea was born.
I was in the winter taking a break and watching the x-files, so involving an alien abduction of the classic kind seemed to be logical. However, all of the characters needed to be at the same place to be in the same spot to ensure that the animation loop can be stopped so they could not be captured. That is when I had an idea of having the washing machine running as well as the one pink sock flitting towards the UFO.
While creating an UFO while making the UFO's legs small, I realized the way everything can fall into place. The UFO has lost its sock and is retrieving it!
I find that creating an engaging story is best through combining different things that may seem incompatible initially. The unplanned event of having something happen and giving unanimated objects a personality by putting silly faces on them can be the best entertaining for me!
The workflow for animation
My workflow always starts with sketching the characters and an outline of the story. I designed this animation to promote Lemonade in order to convey the idea and to help with timing. In the next step, I am able into Cinema 4D and model all my characters. This is also where I test out materials and make fashion frames.
Once the animation within Cinema 4D is done, I transfer it to After Effects for final touches and the compositing. The pink light beam, as an example, is possible to do this using After Effects.

regarding the sounds effects as well as the collaboration together along with Phill Brookes
It was the first time I had with a audio engineer Philip Brookes and he truly did a great job! His work elevates this entire video to an entirely new level, and ties everything together perfectly! It was an amazing undertaking to complete and I'm hoping that I can do many more projects such as this one!
We've had a conversation with Phil about the process he uses for producing sound effects to be utilized in the X-Files project. Listen to the interview with Phil Brookes.
At present, I'm learning new ways to build characters and also creating stunning textures using Cinema 4D and Redshift. I'm trying to blend 2D with 3D animation and I'm excited to see where my journey into character design takes me in the future!
guidelines for musicians making career changes
Some tips I would like to offer to anyone wanting to change directions:
- Discover which method you like best, and then spend the time learning the technique! Motion design can seem like you have to learn everything there is to know. It's just not feasible.
- You should take your strangeness serious and don't minimize your uniqueness. Your distinctiveness is unique. Your voice, style and voice is distinctive.
- Take your thoughts into consideration. Whatever it is that's taking place in your head put it to paper and write about the idea!
