When Dana Miranda shifted her target clients to offer educational resources and education training to educators as well as non-profit organizations, she observed greater satisfaction and alignment in her job.
Over the course of two years Dana Miranda worked as a personal finance journalist, she noticed an increasing trend. "I have a heritage of middle class," Dana shares. "I'm a queer woman. It was evident to me there was a deficiency in representation and a lack of knowledge about the subtleties of the different perspectives that individuals have with regard to the subject of money."
Instead of reinventing the same story which everyone else had been told, Dana decided to change the plot.
Presently, Dana Miranda is a personal finance tutor and co-founder and founder of Healthy Rich , an online platform that provides inclusive, budget-free financial education. Here's how Dana built her online business and made sure that her efforts were seen by the widest range of people possible and even using a route that wasn't traditional.

Healthy Rich started as a pastime for a close friend. Dana ran while working as a writer for a company who was a freelance.
"I have created Healthy Rich to that would allow me to share my own personal financial tales. The website was simply a website with no revenue being generated. I was not sure what it was going to earn income, but I was certain that in the end, I'd like to turn it into an enterprise."
"I have decided to not earn income through advertising or affiliates," Dana explains. "That's really common in financial planning, however I was not happy with what I had seen on the websites I created for. To make sure the site was providing value for the consumer, I wanted eliminate ads from the equation."
Dana enjoyed the curriculum she developed. She also enjoyed talking to students, getting responses and answering the questions. There was something that didn't feel right about selling to her clients.
"I am uninformed about this whole event. I resented the whole selling process of convincing people that they're suffering from a problem and that I can help. None was a good fit for me." Dana remembers.
Limiting products only to certain users was not the way forward and this could be a huge problem. While this was Healthy Rich's plan for monetization however, she also wanted her fans to be able access information for free. The goal was to collect cash, but did not want the money to be deposited in the pockets of those she hoped to assist.

For a broader view, Dana had conversations with the community's leaders and teachers. In the course of these discussions, she realized that there was huge need for the development of a personal finance curriculum and she could be the ideal person to help provide it.
"The demand for personal finance education is growing," Dana explains.
"There are several states with obligations to complete the personal finance class prior to graduation from high school but the vast majority are unfunded and there isn't a special education requirements for those who want to become a personal finance teacher. The educators who enter the field typically are told to teach a personal finance course, however they do not feel confident enough to instruct the subject."
Similar issues were encountered by workers from non-profit organizations and those who provide assistance for vulnerable populations.
"People employed by a non-profit organization may help people in another aspect of their lives however it's always linked to money. People are asking questions about their finances, which they do not think they can answer. I'm trying to assist individuals to gain an understanding of the topic so that they are able to respond to those questions confidently."
Dana realized that she could not sell her product to consumers and instead serve educators and trainers with more in terms of audience. Dana's message will reach more people, her company could earn money, and she would feel great with her contribution.
"I like to give materials to those who require it, for no cost whenever I can. helping community-based groups and educational institutions are a way that I can make the courses available to students who require it, since those who take these classes and programs for absolutely free," she shares.
"This created a whole new market for my business since I could help instructors and facilitators. I can work with both sides of the table and not offer classes to every single user."
As Dana started to build out her brand new educational program and it was a hit, she knew what to do.
"My first course launch was an excellent test. I'm glad that I learned the lessons I was taught but I'm also happy that I was able to learn quickly, and then advance to the next chapter."

"People like to talk about the work they're doing. Make a list of any companies you'd like to collaborate with, and check out the projects they're working on," Dana notes.
"It's helped me to know the area I'd like to work with, which is educators and non-profit groups. I'm from Wisconsin and that's why I'm starting locally with local organizations in the local community. I'm able contact any individual member of the community and inform them I'm concerned over the positive work that you're doing in my community. There are ways that we can work together.'"
Innovating the market she would like to reach and the products they'll need, Dana transformed Healthy Rich to be more than an online resource for financial guidance for individuals. Now, there's a chance to change the way we talk within our communities about money.
"The manner in which we discuss about money can be challenging, and I'd like to alter the way we talk about money. I'm planning to make available the resources educators require as well as ensure that students are taught with a more inclusive and nuanced method, and not only the regular spending and paying down debt that I was witnessing."
In shifting her audience from individual people to educators in addition to non-profit staff, Dana stayed true to her principles and came up with the most effective method to share her wisdom with the people needing it the most.

Dana cautions writers that "there's no single best way for you do you go about pursuing this career. The best way is to try it out and figure out what's working for you most effectively."
Part of finding your own route is to not compare your work to other artists. Instead, Dana recommends looking to your history to find out how much you've gotten better.
"Everyone goes through a point, and they're always looking forward to the next one. What's really helpful for me is looking back on my own life five or ten years back," she says.
"When I started freelancing, I wanted to be an author. When I started taking projects in writing and also various other freelance assignments within the first couple of years, I made very little money. When I am frustrated by what I'm doing in my work, I think about my professional experience and think about what I've accomplished."
"I was fortunate enough to get a full-time position as a staff writer," the writer admits. "In the last two years, I earned an average of six figures as a freelancer. The moment is now to transition into the next phase of my career where instead having the bulk of my earnings comes from freelance writing I'd like it to come from my own business .
"It's difficult to figure out the best way to accomplish it, but if you said 12 years ago this was the position I would be in, I'd not think that this could ever happen. I'd be really astonished."
When it comes down to it, making the decision to follow your passion is a huge win, and chances are you've come a lot further than you thought.
"I consider that living out a dream is an incredible achievement to be proud of no matter what phase you're at."
