Enabling Nearly 46,000 Students by Professor. Rick Hanson's TCommerce's Erfolg Story

May 18, 2024

Best-selling author, psychologist and Psychologist Dr. Rick Hanson is on a quest to aid people achieve lasting well-being amidst life's challenges. In 2014, Rick Hanson has done this by providing online classes for people all over the world.

He was interested in online learning because he wanted to aid as many individuals as possible. Instead of speaking to a few hundred attendees at an in-person course, he wanted to have to be able to connect with thousands on the internet.

In the time that he first launched his course, the area of personal development and mindfulness wasn't as popular online the way it is now. But he had a vision to develop evergreen classes so that people could get the help they required at any time, anywhere.

When he first opened the registration process for his first course and he had only expected around 200 people to enroll initially. He surprised to see that over 22,000 people registered in the initial weekend. "He wasn't expecting that," laughs Stephanie Veillon, CEO of Being Well, Inc. She is the person who runs Hanson's company, "and he realized then that he required help in creating the content for his courses to provide the highest quality. ."

In just two months Veillon constructed a custom LMS and content plan. In the following years they shifted to MemberPress, which Veillon claims is too difficult to maintain. In 2018, when she discovered the site that MemberPress was not in use, it felt like an exhale of relief.

"Before switching to the platform , we had a bespoke platform which we had to compensate developers for maintaining on a regular basis. It was such a headache, and we had to constantly keep an eye out for any bugs. There are no problems," continues Veillon. "Using is a massive weight off us financially and in terms of administration." ."

When she switched to TCommerce  her platform, students find the course much easier to navigate. Additionally, after implementing the various TCommerce tools to their businesses The platform has enabled users to sign up nearly 46,000 students in more than 13 different courses.

Here's how:

They leveraged TCommerce

Before converting to Payments The company was using Stripe as well as PayPal for collecting payments.

As per Veillon, TCommerce has helped the team to sell more courses. "Any time a new feature comes out, we can see how we can apply it to our classes," says Veillon. "It's enjoyable, as we can go back to users who are already using our courses and then introduce new features, which gives them a reason to return and revisit the course ."

While the team still gives learners the option to purchase with PayPal, Veillon says that they're grateful for how Payments helps to streamline bookkeeping--especially with the ease of refunds and clear reporting information.

Further, TCommerce's ability to automatically to collect and pay sales tax feels like the weight of a mountain off Veillon's back. It is due to the new US law that allows online courses are now taxed--and the tax amount differs between states. The capability to file and collect these taxes for creators has been essential in reducing their administrative burdens and concerns.

"I was stressed about the new tax laws and how we would calculate, collect, and send all tax due to the right locations," explains Veillon. "When this new feature became available I was so happy. ."

They made the checkout process easier with order bumps

One of the Veillon's most-loved TCommerce features is order bumps. This feature, which helps the creators to offer more services to their customers during their checkout experience--without slowing down the process of checkout. It has made the company more revenue.

In addition, it's made purchasing the course easier, particularly since Hanson offers continuing education credit for psychologists. Before using order bumps, users had to buy credits separately, after purchasing the course -- this resulted into two separate transactions.

By bumping their order psychologists need to simply mark a box for adding the CE credits when they're purchasing the course, making the payment process simpler and reducing time. Actually, since switching to , the entire continuing credit procedure has become simpler, according to Veillon. "Everything has been automated," she shares. "Users enroll in the course, can take the test for continuing education, retake it if they do not score the required 80%, and then are automatically awarded a certificate."

They used Buy Today Pay Later options

While each course has a one-time payment option, Hanson's team also leverages Buy now Pay Later options including Affirm, Afterpay, Clearpay and Klarna, all of which work with Payments.

Prior to offering these payment methods, Veillon's team was manually setting up payment plans for students--which was a challenge to track. "It was an issue because people would stop or end their payment," she says.

"By using the Buy Now Pay Later integrations We no longer need to keep track of payments. They do it for us."

They focused on the course's completion rates

Veillon states that one thing that helped Dr. Rick Hanson was so popular in the online course space is that he wasn't just focused on convincing people to buy a course, he focussed on engaging them in the course and to complete the course. By using TCommerce's subscription dashboard, creators can identify patterns that allow them to grow faster, sustainably, enhance their marketing and reduce time and energy.

By keeping up-to date with student enrollments, the Hanson team constantly reevaluates curriculum content in order to boost participation. Through asking students for feedback, they're able to improve the content they offer to audience and boost their course completion rates.
