Abstract and bold geometric illustrations: imaginary drawings deeply rooted in graffiti art by Marc David Spengler

A fundamental part of the creation process of geometric drawings is the anticipation of unforeseen outcomes. Marc emphasizes that every form and colour selection will trigger an emotional reaction in those shapes and colours already drawn. optical illusions, false shadows the transformation from flatness to spatiality, seemingly simple details - when presented in the the Ampersand Gallery in Portland in the year 2000, they mesmerised the viewer.

"My name is Marc David Spengler, I'm 25, I live in a suburb in Stuttgart, Germany. Since the age of a kid, I've been sketching a lot. When I was in 5th grade, I made a note my dream job was to become a car designer. A little bit later in my 12th grade year I was introduced to the art of graffiti which has been an enormous motivational source ever since.

Why do artists use geometric shapes?

There's no way to find an artist who is doing graffiti today However, I'm watching geometric forms every day via social media, magazines and even books. As I completed my schooling in 2014, and began learning about in communication design in the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where I'm still studying today in the class taught by Patrick Thomas.

Apart from my studies, I'm working on exhibitions as well as brand collaborations and my sketchbooks. With regards to my illustrations I'm working mostly using abstract geometric forms and vibrant colour palettes that I try to balance in the frame I've created for myself. My aim for each composition that I'm working on is to achieve the illusion of harmony.

How to do geometric art?

In order to create geometric art I'm not drawing draw with pencil beforehand which is why a large portion of my sketches are fictitious. I like to start working from the outside, drawing a background silhouette, after which I think about what might be happening within. Therefore, I'm always reacting to the previously drawn shapes, which makes it very interesting to me because I'm not sure what the final result will look at the end.

I like making smaller geometric designs because I get an easier view of the overall composition. I also try not to overwhelm it by adding excessive specifics. When I'm drawing, I love to play with the given parameters, like adding an unrealistic shadow or creating an optical illusion since everything is feasible in the world of two dimensions."
