Mar 14, 2024

This day is a time to celebrate the incredible achievements of women, consider the challenges they still face and commit ourselves towards a world where women are treated equally. At , we know the day wasn't born in a flash. It's the culmination of struggle, resilience, and unwavering determination. We celebrate this day, and invite everyone to join us take short journey through the rich history of IWD, a testament to the ongoing power of collective action.

Beginning with Seeds of Change to a Global Movement

The seeds of IWD were planted at the beginning of the 20th century. It was a period where the struggle for women's rights gained momentum. On March 8 of 1857, a group of women marched in protest of inadequate working conditions, as well as subpar conditions for women working in the textile industry. This strike called for the reduction of working hours and fair living wages. Years later in 1908 on the 8th of March the march of women working in the needle trades was held to protest child labor, the conditions of work in sweatshops as well as demand women's right to vote. In 1910, two years after the march, March 8th became annually observed as International Women's Day.

A Catalyst for Change

Through the 20th century IWD served as a potent agent of change. It was a forum where women could raise their voice on topics such as the right to vote, fair work conditions and pay, and access to education. In 1975 IWD was recognized by the United Nations officially recognized IWD which affirmed the global importance of IWD.

A Day of Celebration and Action

Today, IWD is celebrated in numerous ways, from breathtaking parades to intimate gatherings. It's a time to recognize the pioneering women of every profession that range from artists and scientists to activists and entrepreneurs. It's important to remember that IWD isn't just about celebration; it's an invitation to for action. It highlights that the struggle for gender equality remains far from being over. The fight must be continued to push for equality in opportunities, confront harmful stereotypes, and empower women and girls all over the world. The main theme of International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women: Accelerating Progress" with the globally used hashtag #InvestInWomen..

As per the UN the UN, these five areas are key to pushing forward this hashtag to being outdated:

  • Investing in women, an issue of human rights:Time is running out. The issue of gender equality is the most pressing human rights challenge, benefiting all.
  • Ending poverty: Due to the COVID epidemic and conflict, 75 million more people have fallen into severe poverty since the year 2020. Immediate action is crucial for preventing more than 342 million women and girls living in poverty by 2030.
  • Financial management that is gender responsive: Conflicts and rising costs could cause 75% of the countries to reduce public expenditure until 2025. This will negatively impact women and their essential services.
  • Shifting to a green economy and care society:The current economic system disproportionately affects women. Advocates propose a shift to green economies and a care society that will increase the voices of women.
  • Helping women to be change makers: Despite leading efforts, feminist organizations receive only 0.13% of official support for development.
