Podcast script writing best practices

Best podcast script tips for beginners

Make sure you follow your outline and make use of delivery notes

When you are just starting your podcast, it's not difficult to be overwhelmed. This is why it's important to create an outline (hint: you can build your own outline using the template free in this blog) that you can have on your desk while you record your podcast episodes. This allows you to remain on the right track and avoid forgetting any crucial aspects.

For even greater granularity, you can annotate your script using delivery notes. Examples include writing "annunciate using a certain word or 'slow down' in one particular section will improve the engagement of your podcast.

Make it more conversationsal

Just because you are following a plan does not mean your podcast needs to sound rigid or monotonous. Make sure your podcast is conversational through recording yourself prior to the show in addition to utilizing delivery notes (as as mentioned previously).

A different aspect of podcasting is riffing - going off-script and letting the conversation run naturally. It is commonplace in podcasts with guests, or co-hosts who are bouncing ideas and opinions around one another. Make sure to not wander off the track and drift off from the topic of discussion The podcasts can be timed, so you don't want to waste your time. It's nice to know that you can always edit this out if you want.

Conversational content can help bring your podcast to life by making listeners feel that they're within the room, having a normal conversation.

Be aware of your speed, rhythm, and the flow

It's true that we've just advised you to keep your podcast conversational and sounding fun, but keep an eye on your speed, rhythm and flow. Sometimes, when we get excited, we tend to talk very fast, and then lose vocal control.

The best way to stop yourself is with a long breath, or taking a second between each segment, to ensure that your pace doesn't get too fast and there's not a lot of rambling. The pace may appear slow when you're in the middle of it, however, it sounds much more rapid when you listen to recordings of your own.

On the other hand, you want to maintain the speed and ensure you don't have too many lengthy gaps - as this can deter the viewers from watching.

Be descriptive

Consider your favorite podcast episodes you've listened to. Chances are, you liked these episodes because the hosts (and participants) told stories and personal anecdotes, gave illustrations or were expressive with their ideas. As there are usually no visual elements, the podcast hosts have to ensure that they're descriptive in their language, to paint an accurate image for the listener. Your audience will also be entertained and coming back to your website for additional content.

Add value and be your best

The reason why podcasting has grown so popular in recent years is because podcasters have a unique advantage - something that makes people choose you in place of another similar service or product.

It's possible that you've already realized it, but the key offer is you! Why do such a large number of listeners remain loyal to their favourite podcasters is that they vibe with your personality, they like your character characteristics, and they appreciate the information that you provide is of value to them in the unique manner that you present it.

It is important to show who you are! Being authentic means you are bringing value to your podcast.

How do you structure a podcast script?

There are numerous ways to structure your podcast, depending upon the kind of podcast you're running. There are different kinds of podcasts, including:

  • Interview podcasts
  • Co-host (conversational) podcasts
  • Solo (monologue) podcasts
  • Educational podcasts
  • Bite-sized content podcasts
  • Storytelling or investigative podcasts
  • Roundtable (group) podcasts
  • Theatrical podcasts
  • Hybrid podcasts

Although there are a variety of different types of podcasts There isn't a correct or incorrect way to manage a podcast, they tend to follow the same structure for the form of an episode.

Common podcast script elements:

  1.         Templates
  2.    Intro
  3.         Guest intro
  4.         Ad/Sponsor message
  5.         Key elements
  6.         Summary
  7.         Outro
  8.         Call-to-action (CTA)
  9.         Credits

We'll now dive into diverse templates that we've designed to simplify your process.

Templates

Note that most podcasts will have some sort of segue - calculated transitions planned out in the form of a musical effect - in order to make the podcast run smoothly. In the script elements outline We have placed a few segues in natural transitions throughout the script. Keep this in mind while designing your own podcast.

Intro

A good introduction is essential in the opening of every and each podcast episode.

There's no way to tell who's tuning in for the very first time. Therefore, you'll want to welcome everyone new to your podcast. Introduce you and the title of your podcast, and state what the focus of your episode will be. It is also important to draw listeners and get people want to know more.

Host or guest intro

If you're hosting an co-host or guest on your podcast, your script will look slightly different as you'll be able to describe them and the reason to be on the show.

You will want to help viewers understand why they need to be concerned about the guest's appearance by explaining in a brief manner what they will bring to the table during the program. Make sure they are introduced in a formal way to the audience, then let them to introduce themselves as well.

Ad/sponsor message

If you're brand new to podcasting, it is likely that you don't have any ads or sponsors in your first podcast - these are a part of the process that is consistent and takes time!

The sponsors typically supply hosts with a word-for-word script that they follow to make sure that their message meets its goal. Certain sponsors may provide you with a particular list of points you need to include, giving you a bit more freedom when crafting the sponsored message in order to stay on brand to your brand's aesthetic.

Key Points

The bulk of your podcast episode will be spent discussing the different topics you're going to cover. The section that follows will be most relevant to the topic your podcast's focus is. Make this section as specific as you want your podcast to run - This is where you provide the value to your listeners.

Summary

Once you're done with the main points of your discussion finish it off by presenting a summary of the episode brief overview of the main takeaways of the episode. This section provides a nice introduction to the podcast episode.

Outro

Similar to the intro, the final part of your intro is where you make sure your viewers know your identity (again) and also any closing remarks you want viewers to take note of. You could give a teaser of what's to come next on your next show, or anything that prompts listeners to keep an eye on the show in the near coming weeks.

Don't forget to thank the guests you met in the program's section. Also, have them make any closing remarks or their farewell here.

Call-to-action (CTA)

When you are ready to end your podcast, there's a couple of housekeeping things to be aware of. The CTA section is where you ask your audience to sign up for any of your accounts on social media (such such as removing your Twitter and Instagram handle), rate or review your podcast, sign up for an exclusive release on your site or opt-in to email marketing.

We've provided a variety of examples below of good CTAs for keeping your viewers informed and interested in the content you provide.

Credits

Last thing to do before you sign off is thank any editors, producers, or anyone who helped your podcast in any way. It's unlikely that you'll have to do this until your show grows in popularity However, it's a great habit to be aware of to remember when you reach those milestones.

The credits can be recited at the end of your last goodbye when the music for your outro segue begins to play.
