The Brooklyn-based owner of a business that is small Carmen Ladipo, her passion for baking began from the very beginning. "I've always felt a craving for sweets since as far as I remember," Carmen tells . "In middle school, I attended classes like Home Economics, where we learnt how to bake cookies. After I discovered that I could sustain my craving of sweets without a partner I was done."
It was not until a few years later that Carmen began making income from her love of baking with a little-batch of cookies online business as a side hustle. "I'd been moving from my hometown of birth to New York City, and tried to recall how to connect with people who were mature," Carmen says. "I was able to take part in the local climbing gym and bring in cookies for those who were members and climbers. It was a great way of creating friendships." Following being "fervently driven" frequently to promote cookie products, Carmen used the extra time between her jobs to establish her own business for food in Brooklyn.
"It was originally started as a way to earn some money baking cookies to send out to friends from the vicinity at times," Carmen jokes. "But in the past five years, Carmen's Cookies has blossomed into an ecommerce site which lets me ship cookies across the nation for customers who have never met."
We talked to Carmen about the ways in which she prioritizes the environmental and social impacts of her enterprise and how she manages this one-woman business with other tasks and duties in addition to the tools that allows Carmen's Cookies to run efficiently.
Social impact
Visitors to Carmen's Cookie's Carmen's Cookie website as well as social media channels are immediately welcomed by the warm and welcoming nature of the company, which includes the slogan "Providing satisfaction for those who connect." The range of Carmen's Cookies features the most recent flavors of the season, such as the matcha lemon. The company also has traditional flavors like chocolate chips made of brown butter and orange clove. A quick glance through the review of her confections to see the joy her cookies have brought to consumers across the globe.
Since the beginning, Carmen's Cookies was more than selling cookies. "I feel like food business owners have a responsibility to the natural world and the local community to consider their impact upon their community," Carmen says.
"There are many resources involved in the process of producing and selling food items which require attention and scrutiny in order to minimize the environmental impact. For this reason, I am always aware of where I get my ingredients from, and how their manufacturers consider their personal environmental and social impact." Carmen is very transparent on her website about where she sources her ingredients. There is even an interactive option to trace the origin of her chocolate for baking direct from.
Her devotion for the cause isn't over at that point. "It's essential for me to discover ways to support efforts of ensuring that food justice is guaranteed throughout the Brooklyn neighborhood," Carmen says.
"Every each year, I choose an organization that is directly involved with the community for the purpose of promoting sustainability and economic growth as well as sustainable food production. I give a small percentage of annual proceeds to the organizations I select because Carmen's Cookies is believed to make an effect on the local community that it is based in." "As to"the Carmen's Cookies community," Carmen adds, "it's amazing watching the customers come together in supporting different causes over time. It was possible to make donations in the hundreds of dollars that we've given to many local and national organizations to support marginalized and food justice groups by utilizing cookies was an amazing moment."
