"Let's begin by defining the adjectives which most accurately describe me: strong creative, expressive and multi-layered."

Claudia's family background

"My Name is Claudia Melchor, I am formally trained in architecture, however, I have had a passion in painting and 2D mediums since I can remember."

What was the process of transferring from architecture to mixed-media illustrations?

"When it came time to choose the career path I was also advised by many others, not to take up a career in the arts. and I was adamant. Fast forward a Bachelor and Master degree in Architecture, and I was completely dissatisfied with my work the front of a computer. Then , during my gap year following university, I began making illustrations, drawings, and products with my designs on them, and I had never felt more content!

All of it started right before I got a job in an architecture office, which I now juggle with my illustration career and my recent studies in art history. I'm hoping to get rid of the position of corporate architect soon enough and concentrate fully on my passion for art-making as well as using mixed-media methods.

I hope my story helps those who are unsure of which subject to pursue to understand that the art degree does not matter, you can be an artist with any background and the best aspect is that it will give your work a distinctive look. Naturally, attending an art college will be an amazing learning experience too!"

What would you say about the style of your illustrations?

"I think describing your own style is a difficult task. I had to ask my acquaintances about this, and how they described the style couldn't be more precise. They said my art looks as if everything I paint appears in movement like the wind can be seen blowing over the artwork and dropping colors on everything it touches. I could not have a better description of it honestly.

I love layering textures as well as mixing a wide range of shades, and I'm an extremeist in this sense. The more difficult I attempt to restrict a color palette and the more expansive the range of colors becomes.

When we take a look at some of my topic selections, the things I love to draw are landscapes that feature mountains and oceans since it is a reminder of my hometown Tenerife, a quaint little island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

But I will also create human-like characters that have exaggerated features as well as vibrant skin. Also, of the course, I include an architectural component - those 6 years of architecture studies have to show up somewhere."

What is the key to making your mixed-media illustrations?

"I believe that the key in my art is not to plan excessively in advance. It's fair to say that this approach can be successful but it can also fail, but not worrying too much about the outcome really gives you the freedom to experiment while painting.

I love watching the process of coloring and making decisions and changing my minds in my final pieces. It shows my relationship to the paper, to my context, and to my paint and you can trace my decision-making process on the final result.

I love being able to work with my hands to mix up my personal paints. All you need in order to be able to recreate my art is a lot of various materials (doesn't require anything fancy, but I do enjoy mixing media) and a loose hand and a willingness to layer paint and start with a blank canvas."
