Painting and installation work - The CreativeMindClass Blog
Nicole Mueller is a San Francisco-based visual artist. Her artwork includes large-scale works, murals, and installations that mimic the effects that stained glass can produce. Motivated by processes these abstract paintings are highly saturated, built by layers of collage-like forms. Her art explores the variety of color, the state of change, the dichotomies that exist within painting, the change of the human condition, and the transition between the outside and inside, the intangible and tangible.
About my background
I'm primarily a painter being a full-time an artist in San Francisco, California.
My professional experience includes mural painting, installation work in addition to doing arts administration and professional development.
I took art classes in the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) located in Baltimore in Maryland, where I resided for a number of years prior to moving into on the West coast.
A large portion of my work and mission revolves around hosting Beyond the Studio with co-artist Amanda Adams, a podcast which aims to improve visibility in the world of art by conducting interviews with modern artists on their professional paths.
About my style
Most of what I do is intuitive, driven by process, abstract, extremely saturated, built with color and layers of collage-like patterns.
I paint large-scale, light-activated window installations which mimic the effect of stained glass, and murals. In this project I'm exploring dichotomies and states of flux, and the boundary between interior and exterior, the tangible and intangible.
About the key to making my work
I'm of the opinion that being consistent in your attendance at your job is crucial. For me developing a studio practice and setting myself goals to push forward allowed me to focus on my work when life gets in the way. It also helps in taking the time to slow down and rest or take breaks (for days, a month, or more).
