Virtual Reality artist Collin Leix, talks about her creative evolution beginning with oil painting to discovering the depths of VR art.

"Before I started my journey to become a VR artist, began as an oil artist who was primarily who was primarily focused on portraits. With time, my style evolved as I became more intrigued by the ideas that go into the making of.

The development of an artist, from music, through classic art, to creating Metaverse

I'm a violinist and I got really interested in musical illustrations of scores, and the many ways to perceive the illustrations as musical instructions. In addition, I realized that I have synaesthesia, an illness in the brain that results in a mix of various senses, in my case, numbers and colours. All of this led me to play with how I approached creating images."

"In 2009, I started an MA on Fine Arts at the University of Michigan, where students were required to play with their art in a variety of ways. The first project I was assigned to was painting. I then completed a thesis that was massive installation in the ceiling, with animated images that projected onto the ceiling. The animations I started out with were simple stop-motion drawings made with paper and paint, with the natural landscape being used as a topic. The work was so difficult because of the medium, I decided I had to keep trying in the process of developing it.

When I finished my master's dissertation in 2012, I began attending the local community college in order to study After Effects, and since the time I've been learning a lot from my own. I jumped into art apps, Cinema4D, and have made a few attempts at cel also, however I was primarily focused upon After Effects. I developed animations directly to clients over the course of a couple of years. I ensured that I always made my own experimentation in animation and afterward, put them up on web.

"I was suffering from a major health challenge and was going through a period of depression that frequently left me at my feet, being in the company of my pet. That's how I saw it. I challenged myself to make an effort every single week even if it was even a short amount of time, so that I could meet my expectations of where I REALLY was.

In the year 2018 I got a job at The Animation Studio Gunner in Detroit since then. since!"

What would you say about your style of art?

"Realism is still a major part of my heart from my earliest days. In the years since, my aesthetic includes a touch of surrealism and a sense of humor while I study the significance of color to convey mood.

My fashion style has changed also since I joined Gunner. Gunner. We are accustomed to be part of a team in order to promote different styles which gives me the chance to play around with designs that don't match my own. There are a variety of ways to utilize loose brushwork, outline, or to simplify elements in design. Here are examples of what I've tried and then continued doing. For example, the piece "Crocus" blends painting patterns over 3D models, both by using real-looking shapes as well as basic shapes, using VR modeling and good old Photoshop paint."

"One reason why I enjoy working in the studio is because the lines that define me my style's and me's are blurred. For instance, take the clip "Interruption," for instance. I was invited to make an Instagram post to Gunner at the time I started. I wanted to add the surreal to show what it's like being in the forefront of making music, and what might be visible to the eye of the mind as well as what it is like being interrupted.

While I was the person that animated the character and a lot of the designing was done by my coworker Ian Sigmon pushed me a A LOT when it came to character design. I wouldn't have got to the wacky arms and the streamlined body forms all by myself. This led us to realize that women's bodies can dissolve and revert back to their original form when she is ready to engage in a game."

"I recall losing an high school art contest due to my artwork because it was not very cohesive, or even in the same style. I thought this was my curse, but it's turned out to turn out to be an advantage given the new art."

What is the key in creating an illustration?

"For me, the art comes from the gut. Every piece has a little nugget of curiosity at the start of any new piece. often it's a new design I'd like try or perhaps an expression, or quotation, or perhaps a short story.

A distinctive feature of my work is that I'm constantly testing various new media. Right now I'm awestruck by painting and drawing in Virtual Reality. The project is also in the process of being an animated short based on Gunner that covers the complete spectrum of drawing a cel using Photoshop from 3D rendering and creating sculptures using VR and then projecting an image onto the sculpture. We've provided a preview of the movie, called Sync for a sneak preview. This is Gunner's debut film that was directed by women. The story follows three strangers as they take a flight and then an unplanned event happens to them during the flight.

What advice would you give to anyone who is just beginning with VR art?

"When taking a look at any technological advancement that is new and new, I have an idea of what I'd like to make first. This is a suggestion I'd offer anyone seeking to expand the capabilities of their group - design the frame of a style or some sketches or a narrative that your plan to write before taking in the latest technology. It's then a goal which you're able to articulate a reason for. If not, you're just flitting around tutorials, taking on other people's styles and stories.

This is a work we created for an event we held known as Blend at Gunner which took place in 2019 where I was the one who created the majority of environment elements within Virtual Reality. I'd been trying to create sculpts a while ago however, once I discovered the right 'why' my creativity and capabilities grew exponentially. This video is a outline of the characters I designed."

"I'm pretty engaged in Instagram too. I've also created an educational course to create your own illustrations with 3D space and Tilt Brush. It is not necessary to hold an education in VR art, but you must be wearing an VR headset to be able to participate in the class. I will guide students through the procedure. It was a lot of heart in the process!"
